When AV Design International was commissioned to design the Buddha Bar in Hurghada, the brief was deceptively simple: create an unforgettable nightlife destination. The reality required a nuanced understanding of culture, acoustics, materiality, and theatrical storytelling.
The design concept drew from Eastern mysticism reinterpreted through a contemporary Middle Eastern lens. A monumental seated Buddha sculpture, bathed in amber uplighting, anchors the double-height main bar. Surrounding it, layered seating zones — from intimate banquettes to elevated VIP platforms — create a hierarchy of experience without sacrificing the venue's communal energy.
Material selection was critical. We specified dark-stained teak for the primary structure, paired with brushed brass fixtures and hand-blown amber glass pendants. The ceiling features a custom lattice screen inspired by traditional mashrabiya patterns, filtering light and sound to create pockets of intimacy within the larger volume.
Acoustic engineering played an equally important role. Working with specialist consultants, we designed variable acoustic zones — the dance floor delivers powerful, immersive bass, while conversation-friendly lounge areas maintain clarity at lower decibel levels. The result is a venue that transitions seamlessly from dinner service to late-night celebration.
